Recently, researchers from The University of Ibadan, Obafemi Awolowo University, and The College of William and Mary, USA have been working on an 180km long earthwork known as Sungbo Eredo. Sungbo Eredo surrounds the whole of Ijebu Kingdom and is know to have been built before the 15th century.
The massive construction illustrates the sophisticated level of urbanization in the West African rain forest before the opening of the atlantic trade. This is a history of great time depth that places the south western part of Nigeria within the framework of a vast civilization that existed before modernity. As till now, there is yet to be any affirmation that the structure was a defensive ditch but one thing is certain, there was a kingdom in Ijebu land!!!
More information about this discovery would be communicated as we get them.
