Africa is not a dark continent. This archaeological research and discovery further affirms that the African continent has a rich culture hitherto unknown. Dr. Abidemi Babatunde Babalola, a fellow at Harvard University, has a research project in Ife which focuses on ancient glass production. This project contributes greatly to our knowledge of the understanding and use of materials in sub-Saharan Africa. It also emphasizes the level of indigenous technological development that existed in the period.
Recently, he made it known at Cambridge Community Television that Ile-Ife glass is unique regarding the technological know-how and the knowledge of locally sourced resources used in their manufacture.
The materials recovered from his archaeological research have been analyzed and their chemical composition established. It proves that the ancient population at Ile-Ife knew the necessary ingredients and recipes to produce distinct glass beads.
The government, according to Dr. Babatunde ‘is not showing any interest in archaeology’ but archaeologists have been doing their thing.
Research of this nature shows that Africa’s developmental level today is not in tandem with what was obtained in the past. These beads indicate that there was a complex and organized society in Yorubaland as a whole inhabited by people with advanced knowledge of materials and technology.
